Apple has unveiled the anticipated iPhone 12 series and come with a host of changes. The most primarily being the design overhaul after 3 years. The other prominent changes being the brand new A14 Bionic SoC which they claim to be powerful and faster then any smartphone. This we can all agree upon as in terms of raw performance it trashes it’s counterparts. Improvements to camera have also been made like the inclusion of a LiDAR sensor found on the Pro variants i.e. iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
A weird move by Apple is that they will no longer provide adaptors and earphones within the box in iPhone 12 series and above. Claiming this move can reduce the environmental waste generated by electrical appliances all around the world. This all is fine but why does Apple think that everyone has a type-C adaptor already existing with them. Barely any phones come with Type-C adaptors except a few ones. Now when you buy the new iPhone you are forced to buy a new adaptor be it from Apple or a third party brand. With this, the box would also now be shorter in height meaning alot of phones can be shipped in the same cargo then before.
This does reduce the shipment costs for Apple but the price per unit of the iPhone? That has not seen a decrease rather an upward trend. That’s so much in India and other countries other then the US.

Firstly, they are not providing adaptors in the box. Secondly, the prices are also not reduced to compensate the removal of adopters.
This all leads to reduced costs from manufacturing to shipment and high profit margins and nothing benefited to the customer.
Does it really save the environment by not providing chargers in the box?
Certainly not as third party charger manufacturers will take full advantage of this opportunity and ramp up the production for the charging bricks in order to meet the demand. Also these chargers are way cheaper then Apple’s thus many people might buy those. But Apple’s main motive not not provide chargers was that they would end up in the electronic wastes, generate plastic waste etc. Wouldn’t buying chargers and earphones separately be increasing packaging waste and emissions from separate deliveries.
I found this headline by The Verge pretty interesting – “Apple ditching chargers saves costs but not the planet”
Agreed that this year is all about 5G and brands do charge high value for it but when removing some accessories which is supposed to be present and also not reducing the prices doesn’t seem right.
