LG G8x was literally sold like hot cakes during the Flipkart’s Big Billion Days Sales because why not? After all it was selling for Rs. 19,990 from the actual price being Rs. 54,000. LG claims that it has sold around 2 Lakh+ units during the 5 days of the sale. This was definitely a blockbuster hit as the numbers speaks for themselves. Since it sold so much, I have curated some unique tips and tricks for LG G8x as many would be looking forward to make most use of the UI.

LG G8x software is heavily inspired from OneUI and there’s no denying in that and the same can be observed in the first instance of using the phone and navigating through the UI. LG rolled out the Android 10 update in late September for the LG G8x so it’s just been a month that the LG G8x has been running the Android 10. Yes! Android 10 update in September 2020 for a 2019 flagship phone, typical LG software update things. Meanwhile my primary device, Zenfone 5z has been running the Android 10 since November 2019 despite Asus being a less evident brand. The tables have turned and now even Asus provides better software support for it’s phones especially in since 2019 when they changed their strategy of providing Stock Android like experience but on the other hand, LG still lacks big time in the software updates department.

The LG G8x comes with LG Velvet UI based on Android 10 out of the box (for Big Billion Day Sales units) meanwhile as mentioned above, global G8x has received Android 10 update in September. LG UX is gone and LG Velvet UI is the new name of its custom skin which also goes along with the LG Velvet phone. The LG G8x ThinQ has some very unique tips and tricks which is majorly not found on any Android phone. Thus, I have handpicked the ones which are unique and exclusive to LG G8x or rather to Android 10 LG phones.

1. Solve Puzzle to Switch OFF Alarm

Always having a hard time getting up from sleep? This one’s for you. You may or may not have heard something like this even exists but what’s not possible these days on a smartphone? Many Alarm/Clock exists on the Play Store which provide this function but LG has baked it in the stock clock app. In order to dismiss the alarms, you’ll need to solve the puzzle first, similarly no matter how many times you snooze the alarm, you’ll eventually need to solve the puzzle. Pretty neat.

2. Brightness Toggle on Brightness Bar

This one is a nifty little trick which I found unknowingly. When you touch on the brightness percentage (as shown in the image below) it will toggle the brightness levels between three predefined brightness levels i.e. 10%, 50% and 90%. Now if you anyway want to set the brightness to 50% or so, no need to slide the bar and adjust. Just tap on the toggle and you are good to go.

3. Floating Bar

This one’s not exclusive to this LG phone but has been present since many years now. Also several other OEMs have kind of this feature in some or the other forms like in Vivo, OPPO phones it’s a circular element which can be moved around the screen but here the floating bar resides on the edges of the phone. This floating bar gives various shortcuts right at your fingertips thus can be easily accessed no matter on which app you are.

As you can see from the image, various shortcuts like Screen capture, Music player, contacts can be accessed from this floating bar. Also can set the position of it to remain on either left or right edge or both.

4. Parking Assistant

This one’s again a nifty trick. As the name suggests, it will automatically mark the location where you have parked your vehicle. I found this feature to be extremely unique to the LG G8x ThinQ. Do note that the phone is supposed to be connected via Bluetooth or Android Auto in order to get the location.

5. Force Wide View with the Dual Screen

After all the LG G8x’s signature feature and function is the Dual Screen. The Dual Screen allows ultimate multitasking like using two apps at the same time, using it as a clicked images previewer or even using same app on both screens meaning a tablet like experience like the Galaxy Fold (not exactly because of the huge bezel in the middle). But the sad part is that only a few apps can utilize this function and all are first party apps. You have to be creative enough to continuously make use of the Dual Screen or less you’ll get bored of it very early on. Not to mention the hassle of carrying around the phone in the Dual Screen case. It’s just like two phones stacked on one another. Forcing apps to Wide View can be one of the creative things you could do with the Dual Screen.

Forcing apps on the Dual Screen can be achieved by installing an app i.e. Wide Mode for LG from the Play Store which can exactly do the task. Download the app and drag and drop it’s quick settings in the notification panel in order to force any app to Wide View mode.

  1. Install the Wide View for LG app
  2. From the notification panel drag and drop it’s toggle which will be name as “Wide Mode”
  3. Close the notification panel after its done
  4. Open any unsupported app like WhatsApp or Facebook
  5. Again pull down the notification panel and tap “Wide View”

I hope you found these tips and tricks for LG G8x useful as I personally feel these are very much exclusive to LG Phones.

Those who couldn’t grab this phone during the Flipkart’s Big Billion Days Sale, well you have got another chance as LG is bringing in more stock of the device during the Big Diwali Sale which is running from 29th Oct – 4th Nov but the sad part is that LG has increased the price from Rs. 22,000 to Rs. 25,000 and eventually this might be the last time this phone would be on sale at such low price. The phone is now priced at Rs. 24,990 and the sale is on 3rd November at 12pm.

I scanned through the contents and surely beliieve would be great for all those who recently bought it or plan to buy.

Technology innovations are great . On a lighter note, features like parking assistant make human minds more and more lazy to remember the things, gone are the days when people could remember phone nos of all their loved ones 🙂
