Asus Zenfone 5z Not Charging Issue Fix (Updated 2021)

Asus Zenfone 5z was launched way back in 2018 and was one of the best phones from Asus especially when it launched in India. Asus is one of the brands which remains silent almost throughout the year. No marketing hype, very few phone launches and then there are brands like OnePlus that are into rigorous marketing campaigns who want to get retained in people’s minds no matter what and even if it isn’t related to phones and its field. This clearly overshadows the presence of Asus especially when both these brands compete in the same price range.

That aside, if you remember, the Zenfone 5z is severely plagued with the ‘No Service’ issue and in 2020 a new issue has started to appear in Zenfone 5z. This issue has to do with the charging in which the phone doesn’t recognize that it has been plugged in. This can result in extreme distress among users. Surprisingly, several ROG Phone 2 users have also been complaining regarding the similar issue that their ROG Phone 2 has not been fast charging or more worse, not even charging. Asus really needs to put strict quality checks in place. Before doing anything related to tweaking with the hardware, try all the common techniques like –

  • Cleaning the charging port with a brush. Dust & lint remains inside the ports which prevents the USB Type-C plug to fully insert thus the connection is not made between the port and the cable.
  • Blowing air gently into the charging port
  • Using Isopropyl Alcohol to clean the port

If all these common workarounds do not solve your problem then the issue is most likely internally. Sadly, this issue involves with the opening of the back panel to check whether everything internally is fine unlike the ‘No service’ issue in which with several trouble shooting steps you could fix the issue and bring back the networks. To fix this particular issue first of all you will need some patience and determination in order to open the glass back panel yourself.

Temporary solution for the No Charging issue

If you are suddenly facing this issue and you recall that you might have dropped your Zenfone 5z then try pinching the SIM tray area or below that. Surprisingly that’s where the issue exists.

Try pinching on the circled part and check if the device is charging. NOTE- Do not pinch so hard as to damage the internals

The Issues being faced by Users

Here are some links to the official Asus ZenTalk forums in which several users are facing the issue. If you are facing issues like one of them, then this article is for you.

As you can see from the threads that this issue may occur the phone fell from a certain height. Well the question can be arised that is the Zenfone 5z’s internal quality that poor that if dropped even from a nominal height, it can cause an issue with the internals? That’s a topic fro another day.

Requirements for Opening back panel on Asus Zenfone 5z

If you are taking apart the phone yourself then there’s extreme high chance that you don’t have the perfect equipment to carry this out. The alternates can as follows:-

  • Instead of heat gun, a Hair Dryer can be used
  • Instead of guitar picks, various cards can be used. Debit and credit cards may NOT work as they are thick and won’t be able to inserted in the small opening when the glue is melted from the back panel. So cards like business cards, ID cards which are rigid enough as to not bend much will do the work.
  • Instead of suction cup, a Suction hook used in households to hang towels can be used.
  • a Cup to hold the screws so that they don’t run out of place.
  • A Plain cloth or Handkerchief to lay the phone on during the process.

The Process

As said above, this issue may occur most likely if you have dropped your Zenfone 5z accidently from a certai height. The main objective of this guide is to ensure that all the cables internally are in its place and nothing is loose. In our case the ‘Main flex’ cable was loose which connects the charging port PCB to the motherboard of the device. As a safety measure for future, ensure all the cables are in place along with the ‘Main flex’ cable.

Checkout this video in order to open the back panel with the alternatives that have been mentioned above. Read futher for details.

You most likely don’t have to open the bottom portion where the charging port is present. This depends on where you pinch and then the phone is able to charge. So just start with the motherboard portion itself. After removing the 8 screws of the motherboard (as seen in the video), start examining the cables and whether they are attached properly or not. Once the ‘Main flex’ cable is attached back in place try charging, obviously without pinching. It should charge & fast charging normally. You are all done.

Lastly, attach the back panel with glue (B6000 or B7000) or simply re-heat the back panel after placing it in its place. The remaining leftover glue will melt and attach the back panel. Do not that this bond will not be strong as before, so arranging glue or adhesive tape beforehand is highly recommended.
