Is this particular pop up message annoying you day by day which says “config data fetching failed” on your Android phone? If yes, then you have come to the right place and I have a 100% working solution for the same. So what is config data fetching failed? To give some context, the pop ups which appear on the screen as a overlay are know as ‘toast notifications’, for instance when you copy a tweet on the Twitter app, it appears as “copied to clipboard” and this is the exactly the same way the Config data toast notification appears. Now the exact root cause is unknown but maybe it is trying to get location data from time to time and since the phone’s location is not turned ON, it fails in doing so and thus the failure popup.

What are Toast Notifications? Toast Notifications notify the user of a system occurrence. This appear as a on the bottom or center of the screen depending on Android skins.

An example of a ‘toast notification’ or more particularly the fetching failed issue

The app that is causing this to popup, in most cases is a third party app meaning you have downloaded it from Play Store or sideloaded it to your Android device. That may not always be the case as a bloatware app that came preinstalled with your phone may also trigger it. I have seen several phones like Samsung, Xiaomi, Realme, Motorola etc. facing this config data fetching failed issue and thus a fix for the same.

Debug the Issue

To know which app or service on the phone is causing the issue, you need to trace it. For a matter of fact, that’s actually not hard and nothing rocket science. You’ll need to install an app called Toast Source. As the name suggests, it tracks to source of the notification which in most cases, as I mentioned above is third party app. All thanks to the developer MichaƂ Jakubowski for creating an amazing app to get rid of this annoying config data fetching failed toast messages. The app is really simple to setup.

Download the AppToast Source

The Toast Source app 1-screen setup

Steps to setup the Toast Source app:-

  1. After installing the app, it will prompt you to enable accessibility settings. This is required to constantly read the toast messages which appear time to time and that config data fetching failed falls under the toast message category.
  2. Enable the service
  3. Turn on ‘Save to database’ to view the toast message later in case you missed to check the app when the toast message appeared.
  4. You can fiddle with other settings on this app but not required to fix this particular issue.

Tracking the Config Data Fetching Failed Issue

Once the app is setup, leave the rest of the work to the app and it will automatically show you the particular app that’s causing this issue if and when the config data fetching failed appears again on your Android device. In my case it was the InstaBIZ, a bankig app. But as this app is important to me I can’t force stop or uninstall it. But the app in your case may or may not be a banking app so you can take action accordingly.

As you can see in the screenshot, the Toast Source app has catch hold of the app that is constantly sending the displeasing popup message. This app is not limited to this particular issue but infact any app which sends toast notifications.

All the logs of notifications this app can retain

Now you have found the exact app that’s causing problem. If the app is important and used on regular basis you atleast now know what’s its source and not something from a completely unexpected source. So uninstall it, force stop it or let it remain as it is, it’s all upto you.
