Motorola announced tons of devices in its Moto G7 series on 7th Feb at a Brazil launch event. Namely, these are G7 Power, G7 Play, G7 and G7 Plus. As the previous year’s G6 lineup, this year is also a sort of disappointment for the G series iteration. All the 4 phones support modern displays with notches and type of notch varying from device to device with screen sizes from 6.2″ to 5.7″. Another thing that is common in 3 of the 4 phones is the Snapdragon 632 processor equipped in G7 Play, G7 Power and G7 whereas the top end version in the series that is G7 Plus has the midrange beast Snapdragon 636. All the phones come with 3000mAh battery except for the G7 Power as the name suggests has a humongous 5000mAh capacity battery. G7 Plus features a 16+5MP dual camera on the back optimized for low-light shooting with f/1.7 aperture and 12MP front camera, G7 features a 12+5MP dual camera with f/1.8 aperture on the back and 8MP front camera, G7 Power features 12MP back and 8MP front camera and last but not the least the most affordable of the bunch the G7 Play packs 13MP back and 8MP front camera.
Now keeping the main specs aside, in the design department the phones do not disappoint. The G7 and G7 Plus support an all metal-glass design which is eye catchy and gives a premium feel. Other features include Moto Experiences features like Chop to turn on Flashlight, Moto Display and several other features. The phones come with the latest Android 9 Pie with Stock Android and no bloatware except several Moto apps. Coming to prices those are as follows:-
Coming to the prices, those are as follows (These prices are not actual Indian
prices but just a converted rate from the global prices):-
G7 Plus: €300 (approx. Rs. 24,000)
G7: €250 (approx. Rs. 20,000
G7 Power: €210 (approx. Rs. 17,000)
G7 Play: €150 (approx. Rs. 12,000)
The Gadgets Hub’s take/opinion on this:-
Let’s come to each device one by one. Firstly the G7 Plus. At an approx price of Rs. 24,000 with Snapdragon 636, this devices definitely is a “NOT TO PURCHASE” at this price point. Other similar brands provide the same SoC at prices Rs. 13,000 or sometimes even as low as Rs. 10,000 during special sales. Although the design is good & premium and the 27W TurboPower charger but that’s just it. It is highly priced and not at all a value for money even if it comes to India at a prize of Rs. 20,000. Motorola Fans are in for a same disappointment as last year with the G6 Plus.
The G6 has the same story as its brother i.e. Plus model. Not matching its Fans/consumers expectations with low hardware at high prices. The Snapdragon 632 sells at devices which are below the Rs. 9,000 range. Just bits of overall improvements then the G6 and barely nothing new.
The G6 Power is similar to G6 just less premium, lower res screen and a single camera. The USP of this is the Massive 5000mAh which is not so unique at this price point as competitors are already providing it with much better specs. This one again not a value for money purchase.
Lastly the G7 Play, “WHY IN THE WORLD DOES THIS EVEN EXISTS??”
To round it up, this years iteration of G series seems again a flop as last year. Nothing much new, nothing unique and overpriced. Motorola has failed to cater needs of customers once again. If this continues, Motorola won’t sustain much longer atleast in the Indian market. Pretty much every Moto phone in 2018 failed to impressed except the Moto One Power, great spec’d at on ponit price with Android One. Now have expectations from that series only.
